- Boat & Watercraft Insurance
Quick Answer: Boat insurance covers physical damage to your boat, motor, and trailer, plus liability for injuries or property damage you cause on the water. Optional coverages include on-water towing, fuel-spill liability, wreck removal, and personal effects. Illinois does not require boat insurance, but marinas and lenders usually do. Most policies run about $200 to $1,000+ a year depending on the boat.
From a pontoon on a quiet lake to a powerboat on Lake Michigan, the right policy protects your boat and everyone aboard. Your homeowners policy may cover a very small boat, but anything with real value or horsepower needs its own watercraft policy. As an independent broker, we compare 20-plus carriers to match your boat and how you use it.

Motor & Trailer
Covers your outboard or inboard motor and the trailer you haul it on.
On-Water Towing

Wreck Removal & Fuel Spill
Covers the cost of removing a sunken boat and cleaning up a fuel spill, which you are legally responsible for.
Personal Effects & Gear
Fishing equipment, electronics, skis, and personal belongings on board.
What Boat Insurance Costs
| Boat type | Typical annual premium |
|---|---|
| Small boat, runabout, or pontoon | $200 to $500 |
| Mid-size powerboat or fishing boat | $400 to $900 |
| Larger powerboat, cruiser, or wake boat | $900 to $2,000+ |
Estimates only; your rate depends on the boatβs value, horsepower, age, where you boat, and your boating experience. A producer confirms your premium.
Do You Need Boat Insurance in Illinois?
Illinois does not require boat insurance by law, but two things usually make it a must: marinas and slip rentals require proof of liability coverage, and lenders require full coverage on a financed boat. Even when it is optional, a single on-water accident or a sunk boat can cost far more than years of premium. An umbrella policy can extend your liability protection on and off the water.
