Quick Answer: Motorcycle insurance covers liability for injuries and damage you cause, plus optional collision, comprehensive (theft, fire, vandalism), uninsured motorist, medical payments, and coverage for custom parts and accessories. Illinois requires liability coverage to ride. Most riders pay about $30 to $100 a month, depending on the bike, your age and record, and how much coverage you carry.

Whether you ride a cruiser, sport bike, or touring machine, the right policy protects you, your bike, and your finances. As an independent broker, we compare 20-plus carriers to find Illinois riders the best rate for the coverage that fits how and what they ride. Many riders also bundle with their auto or home to save more.

What Motorcycle Insurance Covers

Liability

Pays for injuries and property damage you cause to others. Required to ride in Illinois.

Collision

Repairs or replaces your motorcycle after a crash, regardless of fault.

Comprehensive

Theft, fire, vandalism, and weather damage to your bike, not just collisions.

Uninsured Motorist

Protects you when an at-fault driver has no insurance or too little to cover your injuries.

Medical Payments

Helps pay medical bills after an accident, regardless of who was at fault.

Custom Parts & Accessories

Covers aftermarket pipes, chrome, saddlebags, and upgrades that standard policies cap or exclude.

What Motorcycle Insurance Costs

Full coverage (liability + collision + comprehensive)$50 to $100$600 to $1,200
Sport bikes or younger ridersHigherHigher

Estimates only; your rate depends on the bike, your age and riding record, location, and coverage. Cheap motorcycle insurance often means liability-only, so compare what you are actually covered for, not just the monthly price.

Is Motorcycle Insurance Required in Illinois?

Yes. Illinois requires every motorcycle to carry liability insurance, with minimum limits of $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury, plus $20,000 for property damage. You must show proof of insurance to register and ride, and riding uninsured risks license suspension and fines. Most riders carry more than the state minimum, because a serious crash can easily exceed those limits, and an umbrella policy can extend your protection further.

How to Lower Your Motorcycle Insurance

  • Take a motorcycle safety course - most carriers discount certified riders
  • Bundle your bike with your auto or home policy
  • Use seasonal lay-up coverage in winter so you are not paying full premium when the bike is stored
  • Raise your deductible if you can cover it out of pocket
  • Keep a clean riding record and ask about mature-rider and association discounts

Motorcycle Insurance FAQ

How much is motorcycle insurance?
Most riders pay about $30 to $100 a month. Liability-only runs roughly $15 to $40 a month, while full coverage is typically $50 to $100. Your bike, age, riding record, location, and coverage set the exact price.

Does motorcycle insurance cover theft?
Yes, if you carry comprehensive coverage. Comprehensive pays to replace your motorcycle if it is stolen, as well as fire, vandalism, and weather damage. Liability-only policies do not cover theft.
Is motorcycle insurance required in Illinois?
Yes. Illinois requires liability coverage of at least $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident, and $20,000 for property damage. You need proof of insurance to register and ride.
