- RV Insurance
Quick Answer: RV insurance covers liability, collision, and comprehensive for motorhomes, plus specialized coverages like total-loss replacement, full-timer’s liability, emergency vacation expense, and personal belongings. Motorhomes (Class A, B, and C) need their own auto-style policy; towable trailers and fifth wheels need their own physical-damage coverage. Most policies run about $200 to $2,000+ a year.
An RV is a vehicle and a home on wheels, so it needs more than a standard auto policy. Whether you weekend in a travel trailer or live full-time in a Class A, we compare 20-plus carriers to match the coverage to how you actually use your rig.
What RV Insurance Covers
Liability
Pays for injuries and property damage you cause while driving a motorhome. Required for motorhomes in Illinois.
Collision & Comprehensive
Repairs or replaces your RV after a crash, theft, fire, storm, or vandalism.
Total Loss Replacement
Replaces a newer RV with a comparable new unit after a total loss, instead of paying depreciated value.
Full-Timer’s Coverage
Homeowners-style liability and personal property for people who live in their RV full time.
Emergency Vacation Expense
Pays for lodging and travel home if a covered loss strands you on a trip.
Personal Belongings & Attached Accessories
Your contents, awnings, satellite dishes, and add-ons standard auto policies do not cover.
What RV Insurance Costs
| RV type | Typical annual premium |
|---|---|
| Travel trailer or fifth wheel (physical damage) | $200 to $700 |
| Class C or Class B motorhome | $800 to $1,500 |
| Class A motorhome | $1,200 to $2,500+ |
Estimates only; your rate depends on the RV type and value, how often you use it, full-time vs recreational use, and your driving record. A producer confirms your premium.
Motorhome vs. Travel Trailer: What You Need
A motorhome drives itself, so Illinois requires it to carry auto liability just like a car, plus optional collision and comprehensive. A travel trailer or fifth wheel is towed, so your tow vehicle’s liability extends to it while towing, but the trailer still needs its own physical-damage coverage to protect the rig itself. We make sure both are covered correctly, and an umbrella policy can add liability protection on top.
