Quick Answer: Starting January 1, 2027, Illinois law requires liability insurance for every jet ski and personal watercraft, along with any motorboat over 50 horsepower or 21 feet or longer. Jet ski insurance in Illinois typically runs $100 to $200 a year for liability-only coverage that meets the new $50,000 minimum, and $300 to $800 or more a year for full coverage that also protects the machine itself. On July 24, 2026, Governor JB Pritzker signed Senate Bill 2972 into law as Public Act 104-0651, amending the Illinois Boat Registration and Safety Act. Starting January 1, 2027, it is unlawful to operate, or allow someone else to operate, a personal watercraft (jet ski) in Illinois without a liability insurance policy carrying at least $50,000 in coverage per occurrence. The same requirement applies to motorboats with an engine over 50 horsepower or a hull 21 feet or longer. Canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, and sailboats under 21 feet are not affected.
Unlike the horsepower and length thresholds that only catch larger boats, the new law covers every jet ski regardless of engine size. If you own or ride one on Illinois waters, this law applies to you.
Violations carry a fine of $500 to $1,000. If you are cited and you obtain the required coverage before your court date, a first offense can be reduced to a $100 fine and court supervision. That grace period will not be there for a repeat violation, and it will not be there for anyone caught without coverage after the law is already in effect and well known.
Cost depends mostly on how much coverage you carry and the value of the machine. A liability-only policy that meets the new $50,000 state minimum typically runs $100 to $200 a year. Full coverage, which adds collision and comprehensive protection for the jet ski itself, scales with its value: an entry-level model usually runs $300 to $450 a year, and a high-performance or larger model can run $500 to $800 or more a year.
| Coverage / watercraft profile | Typical annual cost* |
|---|---|
| Liability-only, meets the $50,000 state minimum | $100 - $200 |
| Full coverage, entry-level jet ski | $300 - $450 |
| Full coverage, high-performance model | $350 - $800 |
| Multiple jet skis or a jet ski plus a larger boat, bundled | Often discounted below adding each separately |
*Estimates only, based on published 2026 industry consumer guides. Your exact premium depends on the make, model, and horsepower of your watercraft, how and where you operate it, your driving record, and the coverage limits and deductible you choose, and is confirmed by a licensed producer.
Generally, no, and this is the gap most jet ski owners do not find out about until after a claim. A standard personal auto policy is written for licensed, registered highway vehicles and does not extend to a watercraft of any kind. A standard homeowners policy may include a small amount of liability coverage for a low-horsepower watercraft, but most carriers cap that at engine sizes well below what a typical jet ski runs, and it will not come close to the new $50,000 state minimum once the law takes effect. Homeowners coverage also will not pay to repair or replace the jet ski itself after a collision, theft, or storm.
If you store your watercraft at a Huntley-area property, checking your Huntley home insurance declarations page now, rather than after you are pulled over on the Chain O'Lakes next spring, is the difference between finding out you have a gap on paper versus finding out on the water.
A standalone personal watercraft policy generally includes liability coverage for injuries or property damage you cause to someone else, which is what the new state minimum requires. Most policies also let you add collision and comprehensive coverage for damage to your own machine from a crash, storm, theft, or fire, plus uninsured boater coverage and medical payments coverage for you and your passengers. Many carriers extend coverage to permanently attached accessories and, on request, to a trailer used to transport the jet ski, which is often a separate gap left by trailer insurance alone.
Insurers price personal watercraft coverage based on the make, model, and horsepower of the machine; whether you choose liability-only or full coverage; where you operate it, since Lake Michigan and the larger river systems carry different risk than a smaller inland lake; your driving and boating record; and any safety course completions, which several carriers discount. Bundling jet ski coverage with your home or auto policy is usually the easiest way to bring the premium down, and it means one less policy to track ahead of the January 2027 deadline.

Starting January 1, 2027, yes. Public Act 104-0651 requires every personal watercraft owner in Illinois to carry at least $50,000 in liability coverage per occurrence, regardless of the jet ski's horsepower. The same law also applies to motorboats over 50 horsepower or 21 feet or longer.
Liability-only coverage that meets the new $50,000 state minimum typically runs $100 to $200 a year. Full coverage that also protects the jet ski itself usually runs $300 to $450 a year for an entry-level model and $350 to $800 or more a year for a high-performance model. Generally not enough to satisfy the new law. A homeowners policy may include limited liability coverage for a low-horsepower watercraft, but most carriers cap that well below a typical jet ski's engine size, and it will not pay to repair or replace the jet ski itself after a crash, theft, or storm.
Violations carry a fine of $500 to $1,000. A first offense can be reduced to a $100 fine and court supervision if you obtain the required coverage before your court date, but that reduction is not guaranteed for repeat violations.
In many cases, yes. Carriers that write your home or auto policy often write watercraft coverage as well, and bundling is usually the easiest way to bring the premium down while keeping everything with one company.
